Romania reached 5 million people vaccinated. It could’ve been good news, but this milestone was planned to be reached 2 months earlier, on June 1. It’s already August and the Government failed to deliver the promised results.
Not only that but let’s remember what the coordinator of the vaccination campaign told the press in December:
In the first 6 months we will immunize 13 million people, which offers us the perspective of getting a percentage of 65-70% of immunization for the general population.
Valeriu Gheorgita, coordinator of the vaccination campaign in Romania
The initial plan was for Romania to reach 13 million people vaccinated by the end of June. With 8 million people less, that estimation is so far-fetched that nobody even remembers it. But the ‘5 million people by June‘ promise is stuck in the public’s mind. And the authorities failed even that one.
Prime Minister Florin Citu tried to cover the failure by showing a cheerful video on his Facebook account. The video was probably prepared for June 1, as the images with people taking their masks off in public better fit June 1.
The video seems a little bit too enthusiastic and way too late for a country that barely reached a 25% vaccination rate while the average of the EU is way higher than that.
Despite concerns about the fourth wave in Romania, it is a safe country to visit, and tourists enjoy their vacation while Romania still has a low COVID-19 infection rate.
