In a bold move, the energy ministers of Romania, Bulgaria and Greece have joined to take on the European Union over skyrocketing electricity prices.
Romania’s Sebastian Burduja leads the charge and is making it clear that enough is enough.”Within a single European market, energy prices should be equivalent,” Burduja asserted. “It’s not fair that our citizens in Eastern Europe are paying so much more than those in the West.”
The minister pointed at faulty infrastructure, blaming “interconnection issues and maintenance work” for the higher prices plaguing his country and its neighbours. But he’s not just venting – Burduja and his counterparts have a plan.
The three countries initiated a “common front with other Balkan countries” to address the crisis. This comes after frustrated industrial energy consumers in the region penned a strongly-worded letter to the EU, calling out the “significant price differences” they’re facing.
Romania, Bulgaria and Greece are taking their fight straight to Brussels. Burduja declared Romania’s “responsibility to communicate these issues” to EU leadership, who he believes must “find solutions to ensure optimal functioning of the energy market.”
But the trio isn’t stopping there. They’ve joined forces on another front, signing a declaration for major regional energy projects. The focus? Investing in offshore wind farms and hydrogen is transforming the three countries into a powerful “regional energy hub” poised to attract European funding.
With electricity bills continuing to soar, citizens across Eastern Europe will watch closely to see if this Balkan alliance can force the EU’s hand and deliver some long-overdue relief. One thing’s for sure – these ministers are done playing by the old rules. They’re ready to fight for fair prices, even if it means taking on Brussels itself.
