Romania is among the first nations to accept Finland’s and Sweden’s NATO membership agreements.
In a statement made during a government meeting on July 13, the Romanian Prime Minister said that the Romanian Executive is among the first nations to begin ratifying Finland and Sweden’s admission to the North Atlantic Alliance.
It is an approach that we take being aware of the strategic value of the countries’ accession to NATO, and an approach that I consider to be one of the most relevant, taking into account that we are among the first countries to start this process ratification of the protocol.
Nicolae Ciuca, Romanian Prime Minister
NATO has been getting more significant since the military conflict started between Russia and Ukraine, and more and more states want to join this organization. A big move prompted by Russia’s war in Ukraine may see Finland and Sweden pursue membership in NATO, the military alliance of 30 states, ending decades of neutrality.
So far, Finland and Sweden have received repeated warnings from Russia not to join NATO, claiming that doing so would have serious military and political repercussions and that Moscow would be forced to act in response to restore military balance by bolstering defence in the Baltic region, including by deploying nuclear weapons.
