Romania Ranked First among European Countries at International Mathematical Olympiad in Japan

The Romanian team ranked first among European countries and fourth in the nation ranking, obtaining six medals at the International Mathematical Olympiad in Chiba, Japan.

Romania took five gold medals, one silver medal and a total of 208 points, ranking Romania in the best position in the last 24 years, being surpassed only by China, the United States of America and Korea. This is quite a performance for the country, and one strong soft-power hit.

The students David-Andrei Anghel, Andrei Moldovan, Robert Dragomirescu, and Pavel Ciurea, all from the International High School of Informatics in Bucharest and Andrei Chiriţă from the Tudor Vianu National College of Informatics in Bucharest won gold medals.

Radu Lecoiu won the silver medal from the International High School of Informatics in Bucharest.

Not only that, but David-Andrei Anghel also got the perfect score along other four participants in the competition.

The Romanian delegation was coordinated by university professor Dr. Cătălin-Liviu Gherghe, from the Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics of the University of Bucharest, and accompanied by lect. Dr. Mihai Chiş, from the Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics of the Western University of Timisoara, Lucian Ţurea, Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics of the University of Bucharest, and Ana Naghi, an observer from the Ministry of Education.
