A 51-year-old Romanian worker was shot on Mount Athos by a monk. According to his family, the victim’s condition is deteriorating, and he is in serious condition now in a Romanian hospital.

The man was transported from a Greek hospital, where he received medical care but lost blood following the wound, to a Romanian hospital, where his brother told the local media he’d been appropriately taken care of.

The monk was trying to shoot a cat, according to sources. He missed it and shot the Romanian instead. The victim collapsed to the ground as he was shot in both legs.

Apparently, the monk’s gesture was generated by the cat not eating the food he offered. But the whole incident is strange enough, even without any reason behind the gesture.

I want to share the news about my brother, which was broadcasted on all channels but was viewed from a completely different angle by netizens. Some of them thought about the story with the cat, others about the story about the weapons, but too few thought about the health of our good Sandu Costel, a head man in the family, loved and appreciated by the people who know him. He had the misfortune to be on Mount Athos at a fateful moment, doing what he knows best: working. He would have been shot by the monk he worked for, and more than two weeks after the incident, he lost a lot of blood. The case tried to be covered up, but people’s plan does not coincide with God’s plan. So, Costel was brought to the country thanks to the family that got involved and called for help from the authorities.
Victim’s brother telling local media about the incident

The Greek police investigate the case. No official communication has been issued so far on the subject.

The Republic of Moldova is on its path to embracing the so-called ‘European values”. That’s a fact, proved by a very recent decision of the Moldovan Supreme Court.

The country has not yet joined the European Union, but here is where it’s heading, in closer or a more distant future.

Among the values the country has to embrace, eliminating discrimination is compulsory in the European Union, and the Moldovans have started to understand this.

A decision of the Moldovan Supreme Court settled a dispute regarding the presence of a large cross in the hall of the Ministry of Interior. The cross must be removed from the entrance, as it is discriminatory. It was inaugurated in September 2019, two years ago.

Inauguration of the cross inside the Ministry of Interior in the Republic of Moldova

Displaying the cross is, in the Moldovan Supreme Court’s opinion, discrimination based on religious grounds. Therefore, a Muslim, let alone a person from Western Europe, could feel discriminated by the presence of the large cross. Also, a Moldovan could feel discriminated against if he doesn’t believe in God.

It is only the first battle for making the Moldovans adopt the ‘European values.’ There will be other battles, and Romania, the neighboring European Union country, could offer some precious lessons to Moldovans from this perspective.

Romania had its battles in the past and still has. One of them was for the interdiction of teaching religion in schools. Judging from the European perspective, nobody can be forced to believe in God or have faith, let alone a certain kind of faith. It’s discriminatory.

It happened the same with the religious icons displayed in the Romanian schools. They were forbidden, as they were discriminatory for the kids of other religions.

Accepting the LGBT doctrine, a very sensitive issue in both countries, will be another battle in Moldova, precisely as it was in Romania. The ‘European values” say people shouldn’t be discriminated against on sexual grounds. Therefore, Moldova will have to accept gay marriages sooner or later after joining the European Union. It’s the way things go in the Union, towards a no-discrimination space.

Removing the cross within the Ministry of Interior is only the first step Moldova takes on this anti-discrimination path. There will be others, for sure, and the Moldovans should be prepared for them.

Romania is a religious country, for a fact: each year there are built more churches than hospitals or schools. Yet, this is not completely wrong, as spirituality is of the essence for the Romanian people.

Along history, the spirituality and the religion were those who kept the unity of the nation and also the hopes of the Romanians for better times. The most appreciated Romanian ruler of all times, Stephen the Great, used to build a church after each victorious battle, and there were more than 20.

At the moment, there are more than 18,000 churches and monasteries on Romanian territory and their number increases year after year. Each town or village has at least one church, but more churches are being built. In Bucharest an ambitious project is rising even higher than Ceausescu’s House of People, the current Palace of Parliament: the National Cathedral or the People’s Salvation Cathedral. Though controversial, as the costs of the cathedral are pretty high, it is expected for this to become an important point of attraction for believers, but also for the international tourists.

This is the context where some voices express their criticism to the religiousness of the Romanian people, as there are 6 times more churches than hospitals or schools. Still, a spiritual people is not necessarily an uneducated one and there could be found funds for both spirituality and education, if wanted.

One of the most important religious celebration in Romania is the Saint Andrew’s celebration, taking place each year on November 30th. Saint Andrew, who is thought to have lived in Romania in the ancient times and who is considered to be the Baptizer of the Romanian people, is also called the Savior or the Patron of Romania. Immediately after this celebration, Romanians celebrate their National Day, on December 1st.

Saint Andrew’s Day is usually celebrated by pilgrims by going to the cave where it is thought he had lived and to the adjacent Monastery of Saint Andrew, placed in Constanta, South – Eastern Romania. As the country’s authorities try to avoid large gatherings, the local Gendarmerie announced their troops will guard the cave and will deter the pilgrims from gathering.

On the other hand, while being forbidden from gathering to religious holidays, the Romanian people is expected to gather to vote on December 6, when parliamentary elections are organized. This is why the local religious leaders issued a public letter requesting in the name of the Romanian people the right for expressing their religious belief. Also, a call for the worshippers to gather during the holiday was launched and people are expected to attend the ceremony.

This is the same archdiocese which decided to celebrate Easter a second time, the Romanian Archdiocese of Tomis, at that time the gesture generating lots of controversy.

Romanian Archdiocese of Tomis (Constanta area, in Southeastern Romania, near Black Sea) decided to redo the Easter celebrations next week, on May 26.

The decision, which is unprecedented for the Romanian Orthodox Church, was justified by the worshipers’ desire to receive the Holy Light in a proper manner and to proper celebrate Jesus resurrection. As most of the countries world-wide, Romania was in lockdown during Easter celebration this year, in April, because of COVID-19 pandemic.

The Romanian Orthodox Church opposed such a decision, but its leaders let the Archdiocese to redo the Easter celebrations based on the autonomy of the regional archdioceses in Romania.

In Romania, more than 89% of the people say they are religious, which places the country on the 7th place in the world. Also, in Romania, 86% of the people are Orthodox and Orthodox Church has a great influence over Romanians.

The decision of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and of the Romanian Orthodox Church, materialized in an agreement, to relax the protection measures in the days preceding the Easter holidays and on the night of Resurrection, was criticized by President Klaus Iohannis, who, in a harsh speech, asked Prime Minister Orban and Minister Marcel Vela to revert to the protocol.

The brief statement supported by Klaus Iohannis ended with a very harsh message, in case of violation of the doctors’ recommendations and included so far in the Military Ordinances: “Stay home! Otherwise, after the holidays, we will have funerals!”.

Following this dispute, Romanian journalists already started describing the Romanian President as the Antichrist of the nation. Romanian people is mostly a religious one, more than 89% of the population admitting they believe in God. This percentage is placing Romania on the 7th in the world from this perspective.
