Former Romanian prime ministers Adrian Năstase and Viorica Dăncilă joined the Victory Celebrations and military parade held in Beijing on September 3, 2025. The event commemorated the 80th anniversary of China’s victory over Japan in World War II, highlighting a significant moment of global history.
Honouring Shared History

The Beijing parade brought together several international dignitaries, including Chinese President Xi Jinping, to celebrate a pivotal moment in world history. By attending, Năstase and Dăncilă paid tribute to the sacrifices made during World War II, recognising the importance of remembering this shared history.
Their presence also underscored Romania’s respect for commemorative events that foster dialogue and understanding among nations. Attending as private individuals, they emphasised that honouring such milestones transcends contemporary political differences.
A Gesture of Diplomacy Contrary to the Current EU Directives
The participation of these respected former leaders sends a diplomatic message about the value of engagement and respect on the international stage. The Chinese Embassy in Bucharest expressed gratitude for their participation, reflecting the positive cultural and political ties that such events can nurture.
This attendance comes at a time when global relationships continue to evolve, reminding us of the importance of historical context in navigating today’s complex geopolitical realities.
The Victory Parade displayed China’s military advancements and symbolised the broader theme of resilience and peace. By attending, the Romanian former prime ministers contributed to bridging cultural and political connections, reaffirming Romania’s openness to international cooperation and remembrance.
Romania continues to play an active role in international affairs, and gestures like these, even though they run counter to the current international political direction in the EU, demonstrate how former leaders can support diplomacy and mutual understanding beyond official government channels.
