Romanian Foreign Affairs Minister: Romania is More Exposed to Russian Aggression

Romanian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bogdan Aurescu, stated that Romania is more exposed now to aggression from Russia and that it is necessary for NATO to secure its Eastern flank.

Minister Bogdan Aurescu highlighted Romania’s security state at the start of the 2nd Meeting of the Foreign Ministers of NATO Member States in Brussels on April 7.

As Bogdan Aurescu explained, Romania has the longest border with Ukraine, and the war in this country is changing the security context. From this point of view, Romania is now vulnerable to Russian assault, as the minister stated.

As a result, the Minister of Foreign Affairs urged the North Atlantic Alliance members to beef up regional security. Romania is the country that has the longest border with Ukraine, which is why the country is increasingly exposed to Russian aggression.

Romania is the ally having the longest land border with Ukraine and we are riparian to the Black Sea, which is more and more exposed to Russian aggression. Because of that, I will inform our colleagues about the position of Romania, and that we need stronger defence in order to have a more effective deterrence on the Eastern Flank, especially the Black Sea. (…) We need more forces, we need more capable forces, we need to enhance our readiness, our preparedness, and, of course, this has to happen on land, in air, and at sea.

The Romanian minister also declared that in the context of the Ukrainian-Russian conflict at the Romanian borders, Romania needs an increased military presence on the eastern flank and on the seaside.
