Piranha 5 has just started being produced in Romania within a partnership between the Romanian military industry and GDELS.
Piranha 5 is the flagship of the wheeled vehicle fleet for army purposes of the GDELS – General Dynamics European Land Systems, and it is originally produced by Motorenwagenfabrik – MOWAG (Switzerland). In 2004, MOWAG became part of the American General Dynamics European arm in Europe, GDELS, and their Pirahna makes the most successful armored personnel carrier in the world, with 11,000 vehicles being in the use.
Piranha is used as Armored Personnel Carrier (APC), Infantry Fighting Vehicle (IFV), NBC Reconnaissance, Command, Control & Communication, Maintenance, Recovery, and Ambulance variants. Also, customer specific variants are available.
In Romania GDELS partnerships with Bucharest Mechanical Plant (Uzina Mecanica Bucuresti – UMB) and plan to produce hundreds of Piranha 5 in the next years, mainly for the benefit of the Romanian military forces. As the new Romanian Prime-Minister announced, Romanian military industry becomes a priority, along with the strengthening of the partnership with the American forces.
