Romania’s President Nicușor Dan Confirms Conversation with U.S. President Donald Trump

Romanian President Nicușor Dan has officially confirmed that he held a telephone conversation with U.S. President Donald Trump, marking the first high-level contact between the new Romanian administration and the White House since Dan’s recent electoral victory. Speculations arose that the current US administration is not pleased with the results, following the annulment of the presidential elections last year.

The call, which took place on the evening of May 27, lasted approximately 10–15 minutes and was described by official sources as cordial and constructive. President Trump initiated the conversation, congratulating President Dan on his victory in the second round of the presidential elections held on May 18.

In a message posted Wednesday on the X platform, President Dan stated:

I am honored to speak with President Donald Trump and to thank him for his warm congratulations and strong leadership. The USA represents Romania’s closest ally and vital strategic partner. I reiterated my firm commitment to deepening our Strategic Partnership in all areas of common priority interest. I look forward to close cooperation with President Trump and his administration. May God bless the lasting friendship between Romania and the USA!

According to diplomatic sources, the two leaders discussed a range of strategic topics, including regional security, the situation in Ukraine, NATO’s eastern flank, and energy sector cooperation. The conversation also touched on Romania’s current political situation, following recent changes in the Romanian government.

President Trump reportedly extended an invitation to President Dan to visit Washington, signalling a desire to revitalise the U.S.–Romania Strategic Partnership. Preparations for a possible visit are expected to begin in the coming months, with a potential meeting also anticipated at the upcoming NATO summit in The Hague in late June.

The Romanian presidency has emphasised that the United States remains Romania’s closest ally and a vital partner in ensuring regional security and advancing shared democratic values.

Analysts widely see this conversation as a positive signal for the stability of Romania’s transatlantic ties and continued cooperation on key international issues.
