Republic of Moldova, Georgia Apply to Join the EU

The Republic of Moldova and Georgia officially applied to join the European Union (EU) on Thursday, March 3. This gesture comes when the Red Army is advancing deeper into Ukraine.

Both the Republic of Moldova and Georgia applied for membership in the European Union, mostly to receive protection against a possible attack. This decision comes after Ukraine submitted a formal application for “immediate” membership to protect itself from Russia.

The President of the Republic of Moldova, Maia Sandu, alongside the prime minister and the President of the Parliament, signed on March 3, 2022, the official application for membership of the EU.

We count on the support of the European institutions, which have been with Moldova for better or worse in recent years. Fulfilling the European aspirations of our citizens, the European Union will show the world how great the power of democracy and freedom is.

Maia Sandu, the President of the Republic of Moldova

Romanian President congratulated this initiative of Moldova’s historical event, mentioning that Romania will fully support its neighbour in this endeavour.

Romania will continue to be a sincere, constant and active supporter of Moldova’s place in the family of the European Union.

Klaus Johannis, the President of Romania

Also, the Prime Minister of Georgia, Iraki Garibashvili, signed the official application for joining the European Union.

Today is a historic day for Georgia, we have officially applied for Membership in the European Union. We have proved that we are a part of the European family & the European path is an irreversible choice for the Georgian people!

Iraki Garibashvili, the Prime Minister of Georgia

Both Georgia and the Republic of Moldova have problems with their neighbour, Russia, over territories where most of the residents are of Russian ethnicity. Moldova has the infamous separatist region of Transnistria, while Georgia has problems with the separatist regions of Abkhazia and the Tskhinvali Region/South Ossetia. One of the conditions to join the EU is to have good relations with your neighbours and, as long there are problems, some concerns might be raised about the European security.
