Mircea Geoană is officially the new Deputy Secretary General of NATO, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. Romania joined the alliance in March 2004 and 15 years later a Romanian holds the second highest position within the organization.
Mircea Geoană is a Romanian politician, former president of the Romanian Senate and former minister of Foreign Affairs. Also, he was the president of the Romanian Social Democratic Party between 2005 and 2010.
According to his statement on his official Facebook page, he is proud and honored to be the first Romanian in such a high position and he is eager to start working for the strengthening of the transatlantic relationship. Yes, we believe he is able to do that, as he has strong connections in the US: from 1996 to 2000, Mircea Geoană served as Romania’s ambassador to the United States. At the time, he was the youngest ambassador in Romania’s diplomatic corps and his work there was appreciated by the American officials.
Also, Romania, as a country, is one of the NATO and American military pillars in Europe, as it hosts one of the two rocket missile defensive systems on it soil, the other one being hosted by Poland.
