Drone Incursions Over Romanian Skies in November 2025 Raise Security Alert

Romania scrambled two German Eurofighter Typhoons and two Romanian F-16 Fighting Falcon jets on November 25 after detecting two drones breaching its national airspace near the eastern border. The first incursion was near Tulcea County around 6:28 a.m., followed by a second near Galați County at 7:50 a.m. Both drones were tracked on radar and caused local emergency alerts, but no physical damage or injuries occurred. The jets monitored the drones as they eventually re-entered Ukrainian airspace.

The drone near Tulcea crossed from Vylkove, Ukraine, toward the Chilia Veche area, prompting a Ro-Alert warning to residents. The drones’ presence reflected spillover from the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, as Russia intensified missile and drone attacks near the border. Romanian defence officials confirmed that measures to counter unauthorised drones are part of the national security protocol, with human life prioritised.

Under Law No. 73 of 2025, Romania’s military is authorised to shoot down unauthorised drones, depending on the threat. The measure is a last resort after weighing circumstances and prioritising the protection of civilians. This legislation aligns with international law as Romania maintains vigilance to safeguard its airspace amid heightened regional tensions.

Regional Security Context Amid Ukraine Conflict

These drone incursions echo a wider pattern of Russian provocations near NATO borders, including similar events in Poland and the Baltic states. Romania’s responses are part of a broader commitment to NATO defence obligations and regional cooperation to deter spillover from the war in Ukraine.

Romania continues to maintain a high state of alert, working closely with NATO allies to monitor and protect its airspace. The swift military response on November 25 highlights Romania’s readiness to counter emerging aerial threats, underscoring the fragile security environment in Eastern Europe during this period of conflict escalation.
