Cyclone Barbara Hits Romania with Heavy Rains, Strong Winds

Romania is currently facing the powerful Mediterranean cyclone Barbara, which is causing severe weather conditions across the country, including the capital city, Bucharest. Since early October 2025, authorities have issued red alerts for heavy rainfall and strong winds in Bucharest and five surrounding counties: Constanța, Ialomița, Călărași, Ilfov, and Giurgiu.

The cyclone is bringing torrential rains, with accumulated precipitation estimated to be between 80 and 140 litres per square meter in the affected regions. Meteorologists warn that the heavy rainfall, combined with saturated soil from previous rains, significantly increases the risk of flooding. Sustained and gusty winds reaching speeds of up to 70 km/h add to the threat.

In response to the extreme weather, authorities have implemented safety measures, including school closures in Bucharest for October 7 and 8. Citizens are advised to stay indoors, avoid unnecessary travel, and prepare for potential temporary disruptions to daily activities. Emergency services remain on alert to respond to flooding incidents or damage caused by the storm.

Forecasters anticipate that the severe weather will gradually improve by October 9, with rainfall intensity decreasing and wind speeds decreasing. Meanwhile, the National Meteorological Administration provides continuous monitoring and updates.

Residents are urged to follow official warnings closely and prioritise safety as cyclone Barbara affects the region with heavy rain, strong winds, and colder temperatures.
