Tragedy on Transfăgărășan, Romania: Italian Motorcyclist Killed by Bear

A tragic incident shocked Romania on July 3, 2025, when an Italian motorcyclist was killed by a bear on the iconic Transfăgărășan road, near the Posada Hotel close to Vidraru Dam. The victim, travelling with a group of bikers from Vidraru toward Bâlea Lake, was attacked while stopped on the roadside.

The bear, identified as a she-bear, dragged the victim approximately 60 meters into a ravine toward Lake Vidraru. Authorities found evidence of a violent struggle, including blood traces, flesh fragments, and motorcycle gear along the steep slope. Mountain rescuers recovered the body and transported it by boat for forensic examination.

The last images posted by the Italian tourist before the tragedy show him near the bear and cubs. Tragically enough, the last image in his phone shows the bear attacking.

Bear attacking Italian tourist on Transfagarasan

Transfăgărășan is known for frequent bear sightings, and the area where the incident occurred is home to a bear population significantly larger than the optimal number for the territory. This overpopulation, combined with bears becoming accustomed to human presence, has increased the risk of dangerous encounters.

Feeding bears has been identified as a significant factor in changing their natural behaviour. When wild animals receive food from tourists, they lose their natural fear of humans and may become aggressive. Bears on the Transfăgărășan have been observed approaching vehicles and people in search of food.

Despite warnings and fines, some tourists continue to feed or approach bears, which worsens the situation by encouraging dependency on humans and increasing risks for both people and animals.

Visitors to Romania’s mountain regions are advised never to feed or approach bears, avoid leaving food or garbage accessible to wildlife, report bear sightings near tourist areas, and take precautions such as carrying bear spray and making noise when hiking to avoid surprise encounters.

The fatal attack on the Italian motorcyclist serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by close human-wildlife interactions in areas with high bear populations. It highlights the urgent need for responsible tourism and effective wildlife management on Romania’s mountain roads.
