One of Romanian Adrian Ghenie’s Painting Sold for EUR 5.14 M by Sotheby’s Hong Kong

A new record for the young but already famous Romanian painter Adrian Ghenie. After in 2016 he became the most valuable Romanian painter after selling for £3,177,000 at a Sotheby’s auction the large oil on canvas painting named The Sunflowers of 1937 inspired by the Sunflowers of van Gogh, this year he succeeded in setting up a new record.

One of his recent paintings, finished in 2016, was sold by Sotheby’s Hong Kong for EUR 5.14 million. The artwork is called The Trip and it is definitely one of the most impressive and definitory for his style.

Apart from this painting, during the same auction, another work of Ghenie was sold: Self-Portrait in 1945, for EUR 1.15 million.

Adrian Ghenie was born in 1977 in Romania, but he lives and work in Berlin, London or Baia-Mare, his hometown in Romania. He finds his inspiration, as you can see that, from van Gogh’s artworks or other classic painters, but also he developed his own style which is more and more appreciated by the art lovers as his works sell at auction for whopping figures.

Among the museums that display his works, we can mention Centre Pompidou from Paris, Museum of Contemporary Art from Los Angeles or Museum of Modern Art from Antwerp. A modern painter, Ghenie is one of the most appreciated contemporary authors for his style inspired by the classics. Undoubtedly, the art lovers are constantly reminded of the classic paintings when they admire his latest works.
