The man was transported from a Greek hospital, where he received medical care but lost blood following the wound, to a Romanian hospital, where his brother told the local media he’d been appropriately taken care of.

The monk was trying to shoot a cat, according to sources. He missed it and shot the Romanian instead. The victim collapsed to the ground as he was shot in both legs.

Apparently, the monk’s gesture was generated by the cat not eating the food he offered. But the whole incident is strange enough, even without any reason behind the gesture.

The bus tried to enter the Pasajul Unirii – Unirii Passageway, downtown Bucharest, but the driver ignored the signs and the barrier placed for the height limit. The barrier simply crashed onto the bus’s roof, trapping the tourists inside.

The Romanian paramedics arrived at the crash scene, and more than 20 tourists were transported immediately to hospitals. Unfortunately, one tourist died from the injuries.

Possible mistakes committed by the bus driver

The local police questioned the driver, and a criminal file was opened for manslaughter. According to sources, there are possible mistakes the driver had committed prior to the crash, as shown by the videos taken moments before the crash by the cars behind the bus.

The first mistake is that the driver ignored the height limit. There is a clear height limit sign before entering the passageway, but the driver ignored it.

The second mistake is that the driver changed lanes at the very last moment. Should he change lanes according to the driving regulation, he would’ve hit the pre-barrier sign, which would’ve made a specific noise to warn the driver about the height limit. But the bus simply went around those pre-barrier warnings, as the driver changed lanes at the very last moment.

The third mistake, yet to be proven, is that the driver could’ve been very tired at the moment of the crash. Apparently, he had been driving for 16 hours from Greece to Romania. The fact is he had one replacement, but the second driver felt ill and got out of the vehicle before entering Romania. Experts mention that 16 hours of driving considerably slow your move and blur your attention. This is the possible reason why the driver didn’t consider the height warning sign.

While we write this material, the Romanian Health Ministry announced that 13 victims are still in hospitals. The good news is that one woman, brought to the hospital in a serious condition, got out of the coma and communicated with her family.

The main topic of discussion was the severe security situation generated by the Russian military aggression against Ukraine and the fight against its multiple effects. The political figures discussed the importance of putting a Bulgaria-Greece gas interconnection into operation to reduce their dependence on Russian gas supplies.

In the context of excluding Russia from the EU commerce and the increasing need of Romania to reduce the energy reliance on the Russian Federation, the Romanian President and Bulgarian President highlighted in a press conference the importance of energy diversification and transport routes.

Also, the Romanian President mentioned the critical need for the Bulgaria-Greece interconnector operationalization that, once completed, will be able to connect the BRUA gas pipeline to make the Vertical Gas Corridor operational. BRUA is a project for a pipeline linking the gas transmission systems of Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary and Austria.

Klaus Johannis added he also talked about the need to have the interconnector functioning as soon as possible with Greek prime minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis during his visit to Romania. There are promises that by the end of this year, the interconnector will be functional.

On the other hand, we are working on other alternative gas supply routes and we are in advanced negotiations with several sources. It is clear that by the beginning of the winter of 2022 and 2023 we must have viable alternatives that provide us with gas for the coming winter.

Last week, Bulgarian media quoted a senior official at ICGB (Gas Interconnector Greece-Bulgaria), the company developing the gas connection, saying that the start of the interconnection between Greece and Bulgaria could start to be delayed until autumn. ICGB still aims to have the interconnector operational by July 1, 2022. Still, that deadline is a huge challenge, the official said, adding that there is also a lot of market pressure to get the gas connection operational.

A new Greek gas trading platform will operate on March 21, improving connectivity and security of supply in the region amid turbulent global markets. The new Greek trading platform will join Bulgaria’s Balkan Gas Hub and Bulgarian Energy Trading Platform, and Romania’s three energy trading platforms, namely BRM, OPCOM and Tradex.

Romanians cannot fulfill this condition for technical reasons. It’s not about the cost for a real-time PCR test, which is around 60 Euros for each individual, but because in Romania all the real-time PCR centers release the results in 3 days, meaning 72 hours.

In other words, each of the COVID-19 PCR results issued by Romanian authorities is already inadequate for the Greek authorities at the moment the Romanian citizen gets it, as all of tests are taken 72 hours ago. Apart from that, one has to add the duration of the trip from Romania to Greece, on road or by plane, which takes at least half a day, let alone the time spent waiting in queue at the Greek border.

As a comparison, Austria imposed the same negative real-time PCR result for COVID-19 tests for Romanian citizens, but they ask for the results to be issued during the last 4 days and not for the tests to be taken during the last 72 hours. Thus, Romanian tourists have enough time to get to the Austrian border in 4 days from the issuing of the result if they want to travel to this country.

If this measure is kept by the Greek authorities, this summer Romanians will avoid Greece as nobody will be able to fulfill the conditions for entering the country. For sure, Romanian tourists will choose Turkey or Bulgaria, other popular destinations for them during summer, or they will stay at home.
