Romania awakens to the spirit of creativity today, January 15, as the nation observes its National Day of Culture, a heartfelt celebration of heritage, poetry, and innovation. Proclaimed by Parliament in 2019, this observance marks the birthday of Mihai Eminescu, the luminous poet whose romantic verses have shaped Romanian identity for over a century. Eminescu’s legacy, from epic tales like Luceafărul to poignant reflections on love and loss, pulses through schools, stages, and streets, reminding Romanians of their cultural depth in a fast-changing world.

Bucharest: The Heartbeat of Festivities

In the capital, Bucharest transforms into a cultural playground. The Romanian Athenaeum hosts a marquee gala featuring orchestral renditions of compositions inspired by Eminescu, with renowned conductors leading choirs in harmonious odes.

Nearby, Cișmigiu Gardens host pop-up poetry slams where young artists remix classic lines into rap and spoken word, drawing diverse crowds under the winter sun. Street performers in the Old Town wear traditional costumes, blending hora dances with modern electronic folk to create Instagram-worthy moments that seamlessly blend eras.

Museums join the fervour, too, as selected museums in Bucharest offer free entry on January 15. The National Museum of Art unveils temporary exhibitions of paintings from the Eminescu era, while the George Enescu Museum offers guided tours spotlighting the poet’s influence on Romania’s musical giants.

For families, interactive workshops at the National Library teach calligraphy and folklore crafts, ensuring the day’s joy spans generations.

Regional Echoes and Modern Twists

The celebrations extend far beyond Bucharest, painting Romania in festive hues. In Cluj-Napoca, Transylvanian theatres stage full productions of Eminescu’s dramas, packed with standing ovations. Iași, the poet’s hometown, hosts dawn recitals at his statue, followed by literary marathons that run late into the night. Down south in Constanța, communities in Dobrogea share multicultural tales around bonfires, weaving Turkish, Tatar, and Romanian threads into the narrative. Even remote mountain villages light up with bonfires and ballad sing-alongs, proving culture thrives in every corner.

This year, digital innovation amplifies the reach. Live streams on platforms like YouTube and TikTok feature virtual reality tours of Eminescu landmarks, while AI-generated art contests invite users to reinterpret his poems through neural networks – a nod to Romania’s growing tech scene intersecting with tradition.

In an era of global challenges, the National Day of Culture stands as a beacon of resilience. It counters fast-paced modernity by reclaiming time for reflection, community, and creation. Organisers highlight their role in youth engagement, with school programs fostering pride amid EU cultural exchanges. As Romania eyes 2026’s cultural milestones, today’s events set the stage for bolder artistic ambitions.

From candlelit vigils at midnight to social media hashtags like #ZiuaCulturiiRO trending nationwide, Romanians are not just commemorating – they’re evolving their story. Join the wave: pick up a book of Eminescu’s poetry, attend a local event, or share your own cultural memory. Romania’s spirit endures, one verse at a time.

Romanian museums decided to boycott the Night of Museums this year. Only a few museums will open during the Night of Museums Romania. Bucharest has the worst situation for museum lovers. The event, celebrated European-wide, occurs on Saturday, May 18 this year, but tens of Romanian museums decided to boycott it.

Visit Bucharest, the only platform promoting Bucharest in English warns its readers about the situation. Also, the page dedicated to the Night of Museums in Bucharest will be modified later according to the latest museum announcements.

IMPORTANT NOTE: The selection you see below is not the definitive one. Because of the protests of the museums’ staff, as they demand higher salaries, the Night of the Museums in Bucharest could be affected. Many museums’ representatives announced they would skip this edition, and chances are they will keep it like this, or they might change their minds and agree to open on Saturday night. Either way, stay tuned for the latest changes in this year’s lineup.
Visit Bucharest warning to the foreign tourists in Bucharest

Other cities’ museums rallied to protest against the museums’ employees who demanded increased salaries. Four museums in Cluj, including the Museum of Art, announced their boycotting the event, while in Constanta, near the Black Sea, only two museums will have their doors open.

The Art Museum in Cluj shared a “See you in 2025” banner across the Night of the Museums logo.

On May 18, 2024, the Art Museum should have participated in the Night of Museums event to promote culture and museum heritage. Unfortunately, our institution will stand in solidarity with colleagues from the National Federation of Culture and Media Trade Unions (Culturmedia), organizing a protest in Bucharest on May 18. This approach wants to draw attention to the financial shortages within museum institutions and libraries in Romania
Official communication of the Museum of Art in Cluj Napoca

The situation mirrors the sub-financing of the cultural activities and institutions in the country. Yet, the ones who will suffer from this boycott are the culture and art lovers in Romania and the foreign tourists who want to visit Bucharest museums.

As a result of the massive success registered among the public, the exhibition “The Universe of Salvador Dalí,” which presents an impressive variety of art objects of the famous artist at ARCUB – Gabroveni Inn, is extended until September 1, 2024.

Initially scheduled for December 13, 2023 – May 12, 2024, the exhibition offers the unique chance to explore the depths and eccentricities of the genius of Salvador Dalí through bronze and glass sculptures, lithographs, engravings, book illustrations, gold miniatures inlaid with precious stones, surrealist furniture bearing the unmistakable artist’s imprint.

Tens of thousands of visitors stepped into the exhibition spaces of the Gabroveni Inn five months after its opening. They entered the fabulous world of one of the most representative surrealist artists. Until September 1, families, students, tourists, groups of children, art lovers can admire the famous soft watches that win the eternal battle with time, reinterpretations of femininity, embodied in bronze sculptures, such as Venus the Giraffe or Tribute to Terpsichore, Dalinian versions of biblical legends such as Saint George and the Dragon, or ambiguous, distorted works such as Indonesian Mannequin and Premonition of Drawers – Dalí’s proposals to interpret art through the subconscious.

A universe where the boundaries between reality and dream blur, the exhibition forces the viewer to decipher the hidden messages of the artist and to ask questions about the role that objects play in the construction and deconstruction of reality: surrealist angels, butterflies and other Dalinian symbols – ants, eggs, drawers, snails – reproduce distorted images, from the depths of the subconscious, materialized in Dalí’s experiments with various forms of expression and materials (gold, bronze, Daum glass).

The art objects on display reflect part of the eccentric Salvador Dalí’s personality, his multiple interests: religion, literature, music, mythology, and philosophy, and his deep relationship with his wife, Gala. The series of illustrations Secret Poems, Moses and Monotheism, La Fontaine’s Bestiary, After 50 Years of Surrealism, Conquest of the Cosmos or Ghosts and Objects of the Future are just some of Salvador Dalí’s objects that illustrate the vast culture of the famous artist as well as his unique manner of explaining and transpose realities from one’s own life.

The jewelry sculptures in the exhibition illustrate, at the same time, Dalí’s fascination for precious metals and his immense creativity and inspiration: Alice in Wonderland, the Triumphant Angel, and the Unicorn reiterate the artist’s obsessions in a harmonious fusion of gold with precious stones and Dalí symbols.

The presence of the Brasov Philharmonic Orchestra on this renowned stage confirmed its quality and the dedication with which the Brasov Philharmonic follows its mission to bring classical music closer to the hearts of people worldwide.

On Tuesday, February 21, the Romanian Ministry for Foreign Affairs suspended Romania’s Russian Center for Culture and Science activity. The Russian Ambassador to Romania was summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to be notified regarding this decision.

The Russian ambassador was reminded of the repeated situations in which the Center deliberately engaged in actions of distorted presentation of reality and historical truth at the level of Romanian public opinion. These slippages intensified and acquired new accents of particular gravity recently after the Russian Federation launched a war of aggression against Ukraine. Through its actions, the Center irremediably strayed from its realistic goals of strengthening cultural ties and regrettably turned into a tool for propaganda, disinformation and excusing the war crimes of the Russian Federation in Ukraine.

The Secretary of State for Strategic Affairs conveyed the Romanian side’s firm disapproval of the Russian side’s constant attempts at hybrid attacks and disinformation through truncation and deliberate manipulation of reality and appealed to the latter to renounce such practices.

The suspension of the Center’s activity will occur until August 20, 2023, at the latest, when the administrative procedures involved in this measure must be completed.

Timisoara, a vibrant city in Western Romania, is one of the European Capitals of Cultures 2023. The other two cities to have this honour this year as capitals of cultures are the Greek city Eleusis and the Hungarian city Veszprem.

Timisoara will host hundreds of events organized throughout the year. For information about the city, places to visit and all the other relevant information, please check the official page Timisoara – European Cultural Capital 2023.

The most attractive 123 events to take place this year in Timisoara are compiled on the dedicated page. Check out the month you want to come to the city, and it’s easy to identify the events to attend.

Our recommendation goes to one of the most remarkable events you cannot miss – the largest Constantin Brancusi exhibition dedicated to the Romanian sculptor organized in Romania in the last 50 years. The sculptures’ fame and beauty will certainly attract many Romanians and foreign tourists.

The main and most valuable event (…) is Romania’s largest Brancusi exhibition in the last 50 years. Titled ‘Brancusi: Romanian Sources and Universal Perspectives,’ it will have exhibits from famous museums of the world on display and is expected to attract numerous visitors and offer a unique experience. The exhibition is complemented by the retrospectives Victor Brauner – Inventions and Magic’ and ‘Paul Neagu. A Retrospective’, but also by a string of events highlighting new forms of artistic expression at the National Art Museum. We would also like to bring a section of the ‘George Enescu’ Festival to Timisoara.
Dan Diaconu, personal adviser to the Timis County Council president, cited by Agerpres

Major international festivals take place in Timisoara this year, during the events dedicated to Timisoara as the European Capital of Culture 2023, such as the “JazzX” International Jazz Festival, the “Codru” Festival, and the Flight Festival or the International Literature Festival.

Whether you want to visit the city in 2023 for the European Capital of Culture events or only as a tourist, Timisoara is one of the most attractive cities in Romania and welcomes you wholeheartedly.

Soul Ties of Spies, the first book in the anticipated Natalia’s Game trilogy by Craig T. Bouchard, launched this past week at the Gaudeamus International Book Fair in Bucharest. Its first edition is published by Carusel Books and will initially be sold at an estimated 200 bookstores and 150 newsstands across Romania during the launch.

The groundbreaking entrepreneur, businessman, and New York Times Best-Selling author of “The Caterpillar Way” expands into dynamic new genres in his latest fiction novel about the world of spies and so much more.

Soul Ties of Spies

Soul Ties of Spies quickly captivates readers with action-packed writing and a thrilling storyline. Through alternating points of view from the novel’s two protagonists, both spies, Bouchard guides readers through a fast-paced dive into hot current topics like quantum physics, war, the global order, geostrategy, shifting national boundaries, and the role of covert intelligence.

“Bouchard enables readers to peer into the life of legendary American spy, Crew Thomas – a master of quantum physics who searches the world for a partner to help him break the final frontier in the world of spying: the time barrier,” said Catalin Georgescu, COO of Carusel Books.

Crew Thomas and the CIA discover Natalia Net, the book’s primary persona and Romanian female heroine. Natalia is a covert operative in the SRI – the Romanian intelligence service – an assassin with lucid dreaming skills. In partnership, the novel’s two protagonists project into the future, preventing a global catastrophe. Crew and Natalia complement each other through unique quantum abilities and deep soul-tie attraction, making Soul Ties of Spies a tale of the ages. The readers will be surprised in the final pages of the book.

Bouchard adds, “The theme of Natalia’s Game trilogy is incredibly relevant to our society, especially in its current divisive state. The collaboration between Romanian Natalia Net, General Thomas, and Russian spies speaks volumes on how principals of the world powers must work together for the greater good of humanity. The divide we find ourselves in today is not acceptable.”

Soul Ties of Spies is available at Caruselbooks, Libris, Librarie.net, Elefant, Cartepedia, and in all the major bookstore chains in Romania, including Carturesti, Librariile Alexandria, Diverta, CLB, and Compas. The book will also be available in newsstands around Romania starting December 14th.

These ten emerging artists to follow in 2022 included in our top are some of the international artists that impress with their talent and the uniqueness of their creations.

Emerging artists are part of an impressive universe of creation, shaping their own visual identity and artists style. Though not internationally famous yet, they manage to impress with innovation and originality. Their designs lay the foundations of new genres and styles, using art as an imaginative expressive of beauty, emotional power and conceptual ideas based on their projection of life.

Here are our Top 10 emerging artists to follow in 2022

To celebrate these emerging international artists, we have ranked the most famous artists in 2022. Whether for inspiration or curiosity, take time for art and see which are the best art pieces by emerging international artists.

1. Juliana Matsumura – Japanese-Brazilian emerging artist

UNTITLED #3 FROM THE REMNANT III SERIES, 2017

Her fragile, sculptural forms are instantly recognizable, and her work has been shown and collected worldwide. The printed texture of paper, the ripped edges of collages, and the flowing patterns that fill and move across the surface of her works define her work. Matsumura’s monotype prints, etchings, collages, and sculptures strive to reinterpret the traces of deconstruction, absence, nature’s impermanence, and remembrance. Her works are composed in bold yet subdued colour palettes by layering diverse abstract forms.

Art Safari organises Roma Culture Exhibition at the Bucharest Subway. The video exhibition presents wonderful personalities who were gipsies, such as the famous Charlie Chaplin and the Romanian musician Johnny Raducanu. This is a unique initiative to promote the Romani culture.

The Bucharest Subway features a video exhibition highlighting 11 gipsy personalities.

We are happy to launch a new project in collaboration with Metrorex and the National Roma Culture Center, in which we bring to the attention of travellers’ personalities of Roma culture, special people from various fields of activity, from film to painting, people in research who deserve be noticed, because we know and believe that art can change mentalities, can unite people and then this approach has the role of bringing to the attention of the public Roma personalities who change history.
Alexandra Marin, Art Safari project manager

For the next 30 days, on subway station screens, 25-second videos containing informational capsules about gipsy people and their creation will be presented to all Bucharest’s residents.

The exhibition features personalities like as Charlie Chaplin, Alina Erban, Zita Moldovan, Delia Grigore, Moca Rudy, Mihaela Dragan, Vasile Burtea, Ion Voicu, Eugen Raportoru, and Nicolae Gheorghe.

Of all the names above, Charlie Chaplin is the most famous figure. Rumour has it that Chaplin had gipsy origins. Charles Spencer Chaplin Jr. was born on April 16, 1889, to allegedly Romanichal parents, Hannah Chaplin and Charles Chaplin Sr. It was frequently said that Charlie Chaplin had some Romani (Gypsy) ancestry, despite the fact that this claim has never been substantiated.

Photo Source: Art Safari Instagram account

They are just the first 11 we have selected because we hope that this project will have continuity to promote the culture of minorities. You’ve all heard of Charlie Chaplin or Johnny Răducanu, and maybe not everyone knows that these personalities are Roma and are known worldwide. In addition to these, we also have well-known Romanians such as the violinist Ion Voicu or the young artists Mihaela Dragan and Zita Moldovan – fashion designers. So, you will discover information from various fields.
Alexandra Marin, Art Safari project manager

According to Mihai Neacsu, director of the National Romani Culture Center, the video exhibition is a crucial step in promoting gipsy citizens.

This exhibition is an important step for promoting gipsy personalities who have brought pride to their culture. It means that we are beginning to realize that the gipsy elite assumed from an ethnic point of view, has a very important role in developing and promoting Romani culture. Our minority needs elite air and not the other way around. The elite also manages without the National Romani Culture Center and the National Agency for Romani. Still, we, as organizations, as a Romani movement, need as an air an elite that assumes its ethnic identity in public and represents role models. for Roma students and young people.
Mihai Neacsu, director of the National Romani Culture Center

He expressed his hope that after the exhibition’s 30-day run, many Bucharest residents, not just tourists, will have a “balanced” view of gipsies.

Delia Grigore, the president of the Romani Center Association Amare Rromentza, lecturer at the University of Bucharest, writer and poet, is one of the people included in the video show.

The exhibition has two meanings: combating stereotypes, prejudices against gipsy, that is, in other words, anti-gipsy racism, which, unfortunately, still exists and, on the other hand, increasing their self-esteem of the gipsy, so a positive image and a possible more relaxed and even proud self-assumption as a gipsy. (…) We hope that non-gipsy will know us better, respect each other and have a dialogue with us, and be in the best possible relations of intercultural dialogue and mutual respect. On the other hand, we hope that our gipsies may have a different self-image.
Delia Griogore, president of Romani Center Association Amare Rromentza

Although racism is still alive in Romania, eternally shaped by social prejudices, this initiative to highlight some of the most outstanding personalities in Roma culture, internationally recognised, is a step forward in eradicating discrimination and changing the concept of the population about ethnicity, race, colour or language differences.

Ukrainian war refugees seek shelter in various places. Some offer protection from bombing, but others provide a bed, some blankets and some food. Even churches join this effort, and Ukrainians are sheltered in the only Romanian Orthodox Church in Western Ukraine, the Lviv region.

In 1559, Moldavian ruler Alexandru Lapusneanu gave money to build the Wallachian Church in downtown Lviv, dedicated to Virgin Mary and her assumption. Petru Movila was ordained metropolitan bishop of Halych and Kyiv at this church.

In the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, many believers fled from the regions affected by the war as Kharkiv, Kyiv and Zaporozhe. They found comfort in this place of prayer, founded by a Romanian ruler from the 16th century.

According to Agerpres, many refugees seek relief in the face of catastrophes, such as war, so they find hope in prayer and holy places.

There are a lot of people coming from Kyiv, from Kharkiv, the areas badly affected by the bombings. They’ve been coming from Zaporozhe lately, too. They come to church honestly. Being in the church uninterruptedly, we realise what problems come to those who end up praying. For example, yesterday [Saturday] there was a little boy, a Russian speaker, who came with a prayer list and two candies for us to pray for his grandfather who died in the bombings. My little one asked me to pray for Sergey’s grandfather. Many Russian speakers come here to the church. Today, Lviv is an important centre for receiving refugees from all over Ukraine.
Deacon Yuri Fediv of the Wallachian Church

The Wallachian Curch in downtown Lviv is included in the UNESCO heritage, being one of the most beautiful churches of the 16th century, with unique architecture with a combination of Renaissance, Baroque and Classicism.

Since the military conflict, Russian missiles have hit the Lviv region multiple times. So, to protect this building, the priest and local government and non-government organisations in Lviv have covered the stained glass windows to prevent them from being destroyed by a blast.

From February 24 until now, many Ukrainians have chosen to leave the country and take refuge in European countries. Approximately 470,000 Ukrainian refugees have arrived in Romania since the start of the Russian invasion.
