Two of the national football teams provoked outrage at the international level. Why? Nothing else but their…shirts.

Ukraine involved in a diplomatic dispute with Russia for the T-shirts used at EURO 2020

Ukraine was the first national football team involved in a diplomatic incident for the shirts used during the games. Precisely, Russia contested the Ukrainian national football team’s kit to UEFA for two reasons: the first is because the Ukrainian map on the T-shirt depicts the situation before the annexation of the Crimea region. The second reason is because of the slogan written inside the shirts, which says “Glory to Ukraine! Glory to the Heroes!”, a patriotic chant in Ukraine used during World War II when Ukrainian nationalists allied with the Nazis.

Russia’s complaint to UEFA solved almost nothing: the map will be present on the Ukrainian shirts as that is the map recognized by the international institutions, including the UN. Also, the slogan was only separated into two different ones: “Glory to Ukraine!” is going to remain on the inside of the shirts, while “Glory to the Heroes!” is going to be written on another side of the kit.

North Macedonia contested by Greece for using a kit with an unofficial name of the country

Macedonia is the former Yugoslav republic that gained its independence and separated from the former union in 1991 when they took the name of the Republic of Macedonia.

As we know, Greece had a long dispute with Macedonia over the name of the former Yugoslav country and they even opposed the entrance of the Republic of Macedonia to NATO following the name dispute. Later on, in 2018, the two countries agreed for Macedonia to change its official name into the Republic of North Macedonia, which is now the name of the country.

Still, the kit used by the North Macedonian team during the match they played on National Arena in Bucharest wrote the abbreviation “FFM”, meaning Football Federation of Macedonia, instead of “FFNM”, meaning Football Federation of North Macedonia, which causes the Greek’s upset once more and determined them to report the situation to UEFA.

EURO 2020 became a political ground for diplomatic, nationalist, and racist disputes

On Saturday the rain flooded the pitch so much as the Austrian players who were training dived into the naturally formed pool on the National Arena. The roof was not used to protect the pitch, as UEFA wants the matches to be played in the open air. Another stadium in Bucharest was used by both teams to have their training.

Heavy rain is expected before the Sunday game as well. If the weather doesn’t allow the match to be played, it is going to be postponed for the following day.

The previous rule in Romania allowed only 25% of the stadium capacity for the games played during the EURO 2020 European Football Tournament. The new rule will allow for more than 27,000 spectators to be in the stands during the matches.

The National Arena stadium in Bucharest has 55,634 seats, but the record attendance reached 53,329 spectators. The stadium has a retractable roof and it is the largest football stadium in Romania.

On National Arena there will be played four games from the tournament:

Sunday, June 13, 2021, 7PM Austria – North Macedonia;

Thursday, June 17, 2021, 4PM Ukraine – North Macedonia;

Monday, June 21, 2021, 7PM Ukraine – Austria;

Monday, June 28, 2021, 10PM 1F – 3A/B/C.

The categories of persons allowed on National Arena in Bucharest for UEFA EURO 2020 matches

According to the rules for the access on National Arena in Bucharest, the following categories of persons are allowed to enter the stadium:

A. Persons who are vaccinated against the SARS-CoV-2 virus for which 10 days have elapsed since the completion of the complete vaccination schedule;

B. Persons presenting a negative result of an RT-PCR test not older than 72 hours before the start of the match;

C. Persons between the 15th and 90th day after confirmation of SARS-CoV-2 infection;

D. Persons who present the negative result certified by a medical unit of a rapid antigen test not older than 24 hours before the start of the match.

Do you match either of the above-mentioned categories of people? Then it means you are allowed to enter the stadium and watch the games! Still, you have to take into consideration the next steps.

Steps to follow for entering the stadium in Bucharest for the persons from the allowed categories

Steps to follow for entering the stadium for ticket holders falling into categories A, B or C:

1. The ticket holder shall appear on MD or MD-1 at one of the EURO 2020 accredited medical centers in Bucharest with the proving medical documents, in Romanian or English.
2. The applicant shall pay to the cashier the costs of the procedure.
3. The medical staff checks the documents and signals to the EURO 2020 volunteer present at the location that the applicant is in order.
4. The EURO 2020 volunteer applies a wristband access bracelet to the applicant. Attention: once removed from the hand, the bracelet destroys itself and is no longer valid for access to the stadium!
5. The spectator shows up at the stadium. Access is based on the ticket AND the bracelet. Just one of these elements is not enough. The spectator must also have the identity card with which he reserved his ticket.

In case of finding the invalidity of the submitted documents, the applicant can enter the rapid test procedure on the day of the match – described below – and thus fall into category D.

Steps to follow for entering the stadium for ticket holders falling into category D:

1. The ticket holder shows up on the day of the match (MD) at one of the EURO 2020 accredited medical centers in Bucharest.
2. The applicant shall pay to the cashier the costs of the procedure.
3. The medical staff tests it with a rapid antigenic test and communicates the test result after the required waiting period.
4. The medical staff informs the EURO 2020 volunteer present at the location that the applicant is OK (has a negative test).
5. The EURO 2020 volunteer applies a wristband access bracelet to the applicant. Attention: once removed from the hand, the bracelet destroys itself and is no longer valid for access to the stadium!
6. The spectator shows up at the stadium. Access is based on the ticket AND the bracelet. Just one of these elements is not enough. The spectator must also have the identity card with which he reserved his ticket.

Facilities for supporters arriving in Romania from countries on the red and yellow lists, by plane, through the border point at Henri Coandă Airport:

1. Ticket holders from countries on the yellow or red list arriving on MD or MD-1 at Henri Coandă Airport (Otopeni) will follow the specific epidemiological procedures valid for all passengers.
2. In the baggage claim area, ticket holders will find EURO 2020 volunteers, wearing the EURO 2020 insignia. The supporter presents himself to the volunteer, presents him with the match ticket and the epidemiological certificate approved by the medical authorities present at the border attesting to the quarantine exemption.
