Golden Triumphs and Record-Breaking Performance

Romania’s gold medal campaign was spearheaded by the women’s pair of Simona Radiș and Magda Rusu. In their first European outing together, the duo not only claimed the top podium spot but also set a new European record with a time of 6:49.18. Their dominant performance showcased the depth of talent in Romanian women’s rowing.

Shortly after, the men’s pair of Florin Arteni and Florin Lehaci secured another gold for Romania, finishing ahead of strong crews from Italy and Spain. Their victory underscored Romania’s strength in sweep rowing disciplines.

The third gold medal came from the men’s four, with Ciprian Tudosă, Andrei Mândrilă, Sergiu Bejan, and Ștefan Berariu leading their race from start to finish. Their commanding performance left no doubt about Romania’s prowess in team events.

Silver Medals: Narrow Margins and Strong Finishes

Romania’s two silver medals were also hard-fought. Florin Enache and Andrei Cornea, both Olympic champions, finished second in the men’s double sculls after a tight race. Meanwhile, the women’s four—Amalia Bereș, Adriana Adam, Maria Lehaci, and Ancuța Bodnar—were overtaken by the Netherlands in the final 200 meters, settling for silver after a dramatic sprint to the line.

Historic Bronze and Consistent Podium Presence

A historic moment came on the final day when Mihai Chiruță won bronze in the men’s single sculls, marking Romania’s first-ever medal in this event at a major international regatta. His achievement was celebrated as a significant breakthrough for Romanian men’s sculling.

The women’s double sculls team, Mariana Dumitru and Andrada Moroșanu, also contributed to the medal tally with a well-earned bronze, ensuring Romania reached the podium in all six finals they contested on Saturday, May 31.

Romania’s impressive medal haul in Plovdiv highlights the country’s sustained investment in rowing and the effectiveness of its athlete development programs. With the Paris 2024 Olympics on the horizon, these results provide a confidence boost and set high expectations for the national team.

The competition was very high and represented practically the first “test” of this year, before the Olympic Games in Paris. The objective was to see the strong points and where work still needs to be done so that the evolution of the rowers will be the best in Paris. The athletes gave their best and raced very well. At the same time, they learned from their mistakes where appropriate and are more determined than ever to become even better until the Olympics.

GOLD Medals

• Lightweight women’s double rowing (LW2x) – Ionela Cozmiuc and Gianina van Groningen won the first gold medal for Romania at the European Championships in Szeged in the final of the LW2x event. It is the first medal Ionela and Gianina, world champions in 2017 and 2018, won together at a European championship.
• Women’s double sculls (W2-) – The team formed by Roxana Anghel and Ioana Vrînceanu dominated the race from start to finish and won the third consecutive continental title. Only the Camelia Lupașcu/Nicoleta Albu tandem has more medals won at the European Championships – 4 consecutive golds. Romania has 18 continental medals, 12 GOLD, 3 SILVER and 3 BRONZE in this event.
• Men’s double rowing (M2x) – Florin Enache and Andrei Cornea produced a pleasant surprise by winning the first gold medal in this event in the history of Romanian participation in the European Championships. Romania also has one silver (2018) and one bronze (2019) in its records.
• Women’s 8+1 (W8+) – The flagship boat of Romanian rowing, the women’s 8+1, in which Simona Radiș, Ioana Vrînceanu, Amalia Bereș, Mădălina Bereș, Maria Lehaci, Adriana Adam, Roxana Anghel, Magda Rusu and Victoria Petreanu won the 8th consecutive title. Romania only got the European bronze once in 2015 and missed the podium only once in 2016.

SILVER medals

• Men’s double sculls (M2-) – Florin Lehaci and Florin Arteni debuted with a medal as a crew in this event. The two Romanians did an excellent tactical race and crossed the finish line in second place, after Great Britain and ahead of Switzerland. It is the 5th double hull medal in European history, with 2 GOLD (2020, 2022), 2 SILVER (2019, 2024) and 1 BRONZE (2018).
• Women’s four-stroke (W4-) – Mădălina Bereş, Maria Lehaci, Magdalena Rusu and Amalia Bereş won the silver medal, being surpassed in the last 500 m only by the crew from Great Britain who took the gold. The Dutch crew completed the podium.

BRONZE medals

• Women’s double rowing (W2x) – Olympic and world champions Simona Radiș and Ancuța Bodnar won their first bronze medal. In the history of European competition, Romania’s double sculls have won 4 gold medals (2020, 2021, 2022, 2023), one silver (2019) and two bronze medals (2012, 2024).
• Men’s 8+1 (M8+) – The men’s 8+1 team consisting of Mihăiță Țigănescu, Ciprian Tudosă, Florin Arteni, Mugurel Semciuc, Constantin Adam, Sergiu Bejan, Ștefan Berariu, Florin Lehaci and Adrian Munteanu were surpassed by athletes from Marea Great Britain, who crossed the finish line first and those from Germany, who thus won the silver.

Romania’s rowing team, coordinated by coach Antonio Colamonici, is in preparation for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. The European Championships were a helpful check, as the peak of the rowers’ form was to be reached in Paris.

On Sunday, September 10,  in the most dominant crew in women’s rowing, the duo of Ancuta Bodnar and Simona Radis retained their World Championships title in the women’s double sculls in dominating fashion, as usual. Behind them, it was a fantastic sprint to the line, with Lithuania just holding off a late charge from the USA – it’s silver for the Lithuanians and bronze for the Americans by 0.11 seconds, as announced by World Rowing.

This was the hardest race for me. It was challenging. We had a hard year, but we made it today together. We are so proud and thankful for this great result.

Also, Romania won the Women’s Eights right after that. The USA took a superb second, and Australia beat Great Britain for bronze. The Romanian 8+1 crew featured Ioana Vrînceanu, Roxana Anghel, Mădălina Bereş, Maria Tivodariu, Amalia Bereş, Magdalena Rusu, Adriana Adam, Iuliana Buhuş and Ştefania Petreanu.

Romania still produces excellent results in rowing, especially in women’s competitions. This is the legacy the late Romanian champion, Ivan Patzaichin, left behind – a generation which honours his memory in World, Olympic and European championships.

As reported by Agerpres, Ionela Cozmiuc won the gold medal in the women’s lightweight single sculls on Sunday at the European Rowing Championships in Munich, clocking 08 minutes 04.41 seconds. Zoi Fitsiou of Greece came in second with 08 min 09.21 seconds, and Martine Veldhuis of the Netherlands finished third with 08 min 10.20 seconds.

Also, Romania’s women’s 8+ crew of Magdalena Rusu, Iuliana Buhus, Ancuta Bodnar, Denisa Tilvescu, Madalina Beres, Amalia Beres, Ioana Vrinceanu, Simona Radis, Adrian Munteanu, clinched the European gold on Sunday, with a time of 06 min 26.38, ahead of Great Britain (06 min 28.02 seconds) and the Netherlands (06 min 35.68 seconds).
