The volume of money flowing into Romania signals that these connections remain strong despite distance and challenges. The funds transferred this year continue to place Romania among the top countries in the European Union in terms of remittances as a share of GDP.

Predominantly, the money is sent from Western European countries where significant Romanian communities have settled, including the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, and Spain. Many Romanians moved abroad seeking better job opportunities and sent these earnings home to sustain their loved ones. For many recipients, remittances are a critical lifeline, especially as inflation and rising living costs place pressure on household budgets.

Experts note that these transfers do more than help families—they also help support Romania’s broader economy. The influx of funds plays a role in stabilising the national currency and offsetting some of the country’s current account deficit. Moreover, a noticeable number of Romanian expatriates are now investing their savings domestically or preparing to return and contribute through entrepreneurship or property purchases.

The data also reflects a somewhat complex dynamic: while remittances from Romanians abroad represent a significant inflow, the country is still faced with the challenge of more workers leaving than returning. Consequently, policymakers are urged to focus on creating attractive conditions to retain talent and encourage the diaspora’s return, to reduce long-term economic losses.

The remittance figures for early 2025 stand as a testament to the enduring ties between Romanians at home and those abroad. For many families, these funds are more than just money—they are connections of care, hope, and the promise of a better future.

Therefore, according to the Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, it is strongly recommended that Romanian citizens leave Russia.

Given these restrictions, as well as the fact that the regional security situation remains extremely tense and unpredictable, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) strongly recommends Romanian citizens avoid non-essential travel to the Russian Federation. Those who are temporarily in this country should consider leaving the territory of the Russian Federation as soon as possible, through commercial flights still available.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Romania informs that Romanian citizens wishing to leave the territory of the Russian Federation currently have alternative routes of travel by regular flights, with stops, through the Republic of Turkey / Istanbul and the United Arab Emirates / Dubai or by road, with airlines transport through Estonia.

At the same time, the MFA recommends to the Romanian citizens who are on the territory of the Russian Federation to register their presence without delay through the platform www.econsulat.ro, at https://www.econsulat.ro/CetateniRomaniInregistrati/Inregistreaza, available both on PC or laptop, as well as from the mobile phone.

Romanian citizens can request consular assistance at the telephone number of the Romanian Embassy in Moscow: +7 499 143 0427; +7 499 143 0350, of the Consulate General of Romania in St. Petersburg: +7812 3126141 and of the Consulate General of Romania in Rostov-on-Don: +7 (863) 283 10 15 the calls being redirected to the Contact and Support Center of Romanian Citizens in Abroad (CCSCRS) and taken over by Call Center operators permanently.

Also, the Romanian citizens facing a difficult, special, emergency situation have at their disposal the emergency telephone number of the Romanian diplomatic mission in Moscow: +7 916 017 9882, as well as the emergency telephones of the consular offices at St. Petersburg: +7. 965. 777.43.38 and Rostov-on-Don: +7 (909) 437 72 22.

The event was possible with the help of the Romanian Embassy in Ontario and a local TV show dedicated to Romanian community in Canada, both persuading the Niagara Parks Commission to offer this symbolic gift to Romanians everywhere on December 1.

The event will be broadcast live on the Niagara falls dedicated website. Romanians could see the event Tuesday, between 21.45 and 22.00, Niagara falls local time. It will be the second year in a row when this will happen.

This is why the Romanian Government decided to start a campaign dedicated to the Romanians recently come back from other countries or to the ones living abroad. The campaign is called “Live, Work and Welcome the Romanian way!” and the message of the campaign is “We wait all of you back home! We have jobs for you, especially in hospitality!”.

The officials are optimistic about the campaign and think this will persuade the Romanians from Diaspora to choose jobs in Romania. Yet, one cannot avoid noticing the contradiction: while the Government try to persuade Romanians with the jobs in hospitality, the same Government keeps the restaurants closed for the last 4 months.

The situation for the restaurant owners is critical in Romania as the authorities, despite their desperate cry for help, keep the restaurants closed indoors, apart from the terraces. Tens of thousands of restaurant owners are close to bankruptcy and the long waited help from the Government is not yet in sight.

Romanian PM promised to help the restaurant owners and all the other SMEs’ entrepreneurs affected by this crisis. There is a catch, though: the help is to come only after the contracts will be signed at the end of this year. Besides, for getting Governmental help, the entrepreneurs must accomplish conditions which cannot be fulfilled any longer. Among them, all the affected businesses must have a certificate of emergency, which ceased to be issued on June 15, long before the launching of this program. On top of that, there is another condition: all the restaurants whose owners tried to survive the crisis and started delivery do not qualify for the Governmental help. All these conditions have been published in the draft of the law published on the Ministry of Economy website.

In other words, the intention of the Romanian authorities to keep the Diaspora in the country is good, but the message of the campaign does not match the existing situation, but on the contrary. According to unions, 50% of all hospitality locations will close their doors until the end of the year because of the crisis.
