The Heir of the British Crown and the Romanian president discussed bilateral relations and the Romanian-British Strategic Partnership, Romania’s assistance to Ukraine and Ukrainian refugees, climate change solutions and biodiversity conservation, and the opportunity to develop climate change educational projects.

According to the Presidential Administration, the President informed the Prince of Wales about the humanitarian hub in Suceava and the coordination of support efforts by several countries for Ukraine’s benefit.

President Klaus Johannis discussed with His Royal Highness solutions to mitigate the effects of climate change and conserve biodiversity that is applicable in Romania, the United Kingdom, and around the world, emphasizing our country’s commitment to meeting European climate change targets.

The president emphasized that financing green projects, afforestation of degraded lands, and habitat reconstruction are priorities outlined in the National Recovery and Resilience Plan, with significant financial allocations.

A related topic was the opportunity to develop climate change educational projects to raise awareness and prepare the younger generations for green jobs available in the labour market capable of generating sustainable economic growth.

Official discussions revolved around the theme of the war in Ukraine. Prince Charles had a more detailed discussion on the situation in Ukraine with Romanian Prime Minister Nicolae Ciuca at the Victoria Palace. According to a government statement, His Royal Highness’ main concerns were the threat to global food security posed by Russian troops blocking the ports of Odessa and Nikolaev.

Prime Minister Nicolae Ciuca also gave a detailed presentation on Romania’s efforts to assist Ukraine in all areas, including receiving and hosting refugees, assisting internally displaced Ukrainian citizens and those defending their country, and assisting Ukrainian grain exports. Simultaneously, in Bucharest, the head of the government presented an analysis of the military situation in Ukraine and the prospects and threats generated in the Black Sea region.

Prince Charles also met with the custodian of the Romanian Crown, Princess Margaret at the Elizabeth Palace after visiting the President and Prime Minister.

Her Majesty Margaret and Her Royal Highness Prince Consort greeted the Prince of Wales upon his arrival.

Later, Prince Charles visited the Romanian authorities’ Romexpo centre for Ukrainian refugees. The Prince of Wales, accompanied by the Crown Custodian, Margaret, met with representatives of organizations that donate or work here, including World Vision, the Salvation Army, the Red Cross, UNHCR, and representatives of the Capital City Hall.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

As Romanians everywhere celebrate Orthodox Easter, I do just want you all to know how much I’m thinking of you at this most holy time of the year.

Easter, of course, is usually a time when people come together, to worship together and to renew their bonds of community and of faith. Many Romanians in the United Kingdom, would, I know, have hoped to return to Romania for Easter and to be reunited with their families and their friends.

This year, in the midst of this dreadful pandemic, with which we’re all faced, non of the usual ways are possible. This is very hard for us all, I know, but particularly for those who are so far apart from those they love.

At the same time I know just how many Romanians in the United Kingdom are playing an indispensable role in our national health service, in our care homes, and in other key roles as we address this unprecedented public health crisis. We owe them an immense debt of gratitude and I can hardly say how much their remarkable efforts are appreciated by us all.

For my part, I should greatly look forward to some point of the future to returning to Romania, a country which holds such a special place in my heart, as well as to meeting members of the Romanian community in this country once again.

Until then, I can only wish you all a very happy Easter and to say how much you are in my special thoughts and prayers.
