Romania is a country who, especially during the communist regime, up to 1989, was renowned in Europe for the thermal springs and spas. The standards of the thermal waters and the affordable prices were the incentives for which foreign tourists came in thousands in Romania for treating their medical affections or simply for enjoying a relaxing holiday.

Now, 30 years after, Romania is also renowned in Europe, but also on other continents, for the quality of the thermal and mineral springs. Recently, New York Times dedicated an article in which the journalists praised Romania for the quality of its mineral springs.

Now, The Guardian included Romanian Baile Herculane resort in the Top 10 Budget Spa Holidays in Eastern Europe. The recommendation say that “inflammatory, spinal and neurological conditions can be soothed by ozone therapy, magnet therapy and herbal plant baths, as well as complimentary access to thermal pools and saunas for all package guests“.

Romanians and foreigners alike seek the Romanian thermal springs for their quality and “life-giving waters“. Maybe this should have been a reason for which Romanian governments which succeeded after 1989 to allot a certain satisfactory budget for improving the conditions of these renowned resorts.

Baile Herculane is nominated along other resorts from Serbia, Belarus, Ukraine or Hungary.

1 Billion Euro a year – this is the value of the Romanian mineral water industry. While it might seem to be a huge sum, it isn’t, compared to its potential. Romanians consume less mineral water than most of the European countries, even if the consumption increased during the last decade. But the game isn’t about internal consumption, but about exports, which could bring billions of Euros in the country.

Basically, Romania has the most important reserve of mineral waters in Europe, helped by 80,000 km squares of forests. Some of the water from the springs passes even 20 years in the underground before coming out, while being naturally enriched by minerals.

According to specialists, the purity of the mineral water from Romania is recognized all over the world and it is appreciated even in the United States, where one of the Romanian producers sells Romanian mineral water.

The paradox is that, while having the best and the richest reserve of mineral waters in Europe, Romania is not the first in exploiting its mineral waters. Moreover, American publications praised the potential of the Romanian mineral springs, but this potential fails when it comes to being exploited and valued.

1 Billion Euro a year out of the 145 billion Euros globally – this is lower than Romania’s mineral waters potential, even if the Romanian industry grew with 70% in the last decade.

Yet, at the last Conference on the potential of the Romanian mineral waters, organized by important economic publications and supported by the Romanian mineral waters players, there was a consensus for Romania to become the queen of the mineral waters around the world.

Romania’s potential in exploiting the mineral waters and sell them worldwide is huge. The players have the determination and the Government, whose representatives attended the conference, is set to help this industry.

All Romania needs is an adequate branding strategy for its mineral waters. The consumers worldwide need to recognize Romanian mineral waters by their quality and by their purity. Romania has to become a brand first and it will sell more afterwards.

Hungarian columnist Palko Karasz of New York Times wrote an article about the mineral springs from Transylvania, Romania. The article describes the habit of the inhabitants from Baile Herculane, a mountain resort in Transylvania, who gather each morning to take water from a local spring. The water is said to have healing power as it comes from the volcanic mountains.

The author presents both the beauty of these magnificent places and the potential of the Romanian mineral water, but also the failure of the Romanian Governments, from the beginning of the 20th century onward in making these areas flourish.

Indeed, locals and foreigners, most of them from the neighboring Hungary, know about the healing power of the mineral springs from Transylvania; yet, these mountain resorts still have to get investments in order to accommodate more tourists and to offer them the best conditions to treat their conditions.

What is interesting is that the author of the article comes from a country whose capital city, Budapest, is famous all over the world for the thermal baths and SPAs with no less than 118 thermal springs and 15 public thermal baths, along with many other private ones. It means the author is deeply familiarized with the touristic potential of the mineral waters and thermal springs.

Indeed, the Romanian Government should do more for these promising mountain resorts which, after the fall of the communist regime, were too little taken care of and modernized.
