While Romanians still believe external forces influence the outcome of these elections, this weekend’s elections are crucial for a country that entered international attention after last year’s unprecedented scenario when the first round was cancelled for (yet) undisclosed actions of the candidate who occupied the top position on the ballot.

Monday 01.00: PARTIAL RESULTS

George Simion will run against Nicusor Dan in round two of the Romanian Presidential Elections.

Sunday 21.00: EXIT POLLS

Exit polls show George Simion (nationalist party AUR) won the first round of elections, followed by Nicusor Dan (current Bucharest Mayor) and Crin Antonescu (coalition’s representative—Socialists, Liberals, and Hungarian Minority). The voting trend shows Nicusor Dan has more chances of entering the final round, but only the official count matters.

Sunday 20.00: 50% voting presence

By 8.00 p.m., 9,000,555 voters had voted in the first round of the presidential elections on Sunday, representing 50.04% of those registered on the electoral lists, according to data provided in real time by the Permanent Electoral Authority. 5,430,800 voters voted in urban areas, and 3,569,755 voters in rural areas.
Of the 9,116,092 voters who voted by 8:00 p.m., 8,176,368 voted in the country, or 45.45%, and 939,724 voted abroad.

Sunday 13.00: Massive presence abroad

According to data provided by the Permanent Electoral Authority, by 1:00 p.m., on Sunday, May 4, 2025, 563,849 Romanians from the diaspora had voted, compared to 360,374 Romanians in November 2024.

Sunday 12.00: Voting presence

3,551,524 Romanians voted by noon, Sunday, in the country and abroad. The majority are men from urban areas aged between 45 and 64.

Saturday 20.00: Voting presence

Over 350,000 Romanian citizens abroad have already voted in the presidential elections in Romania. This figure is almost double that recorded in the first round of the November 2024 elections, when over 197,000 Romanians voted.

The highest voter turnout in the diaspora is currently recorded in Italy (over 58,000 voters), Germany (over 55,000), the UK (over 51,000) and Spain (over 42,000). Also, over 31,000 voters have voted in the Republic of Moldova.

Saturday 18.00: Voting presence

According to official data, over 300,000 Romanians have already voted abroad, and voter turnout is currently almost 1.7%. In comparison, at the same time and day in the first round of the presidential elections in November 2024, around 150,000 Romanians in the diaspora voted.

Saturday 16.00: Voting presence

Over 250,000 people showed up to vote, by Saturday, at 4:00 p.m., at polling stations open outside the country. 247,109 of the Romanians in the diaspora voted on the supplementary lists. For comparison, in the elections of November 24, 2024, by Saturday, at 4:00 p.m., 125,126 people voted, of which 120,899 on the supplementary lists.

Saturday 12.00: Voters abroad break the election law

Romanians abroad started filming or taking photos with their vote, which breaks the election law.

Given the multiple reports of people filming themselves in the voting booth and making the recordings public online, revealing their voting option and violating the secrecy of the vote, the Central Electoral Bureau draws attention to the illicit nature of this behaviour. These actions contravene the provisions of art. 37 par. (2) of Law no. 370/2004, according to which “the means used in the electoral campaign may not contravene the rule of law”

Saturday 10.00: Voting presence

By Saturday at 10:00, over 127,000 people had voted at polling stations outside the country in the presidential election. To these are added 4,106 voters on mailing lists, totalling 132,029.
