The government approved the plan to save TAROM, the state-owned Romania Air Company.

Romania’s Minister of Transport, Sorin Grindeanu, announces that state aid worth 471.04 million lei (approx EUR 94.4) for TAROM has been approved. Through this aid, TAROM will undergo an extensive transformation and could return to profit as early as 2024. For the last decade, TAROM has been a loss-making company.

This aid, worth 471.04 million lei, is granted based on a decision issued by the European Commission on April 29, 2024.

The allocated amount has the following destinations:

up to 214.3 million lei represents restructuring aid that is proposed to be granted in the form of capitalization in 2024;

12.51 million lei represents the share capital increase carried out in 2023;

TAROM will use the 214.3 million lei (for working capital) to cover the liquidity deficit and the financial balancing of the company in 2024. These operations will create the context of the company’s profitability and its transition to profit as early as 2024.

The European Commission approved, at the end of April, under EU state aid rules, Romania’s plans to grant the state-owned national air carrier, TAROM, restructuring aid worth up to 95.3 million euros (473.69 million lei). The measure will allow the company to restore its long-term viability while minimizing distortions of competition.

On May 28, 2021, Romania notified the Commission of a plan to restructure the company Tarom. The restructuring plan sets out measures to streamline Tarom’s operations, renew its aging fleet and cut costs.

The restructuring measures include the following: cancellation of debt of approximately EUR 49.53 million (246.19 million lei) corresponding to the value of the rescue aid, approved by the Commission in February 2020, plus related interest; and a capital injection of approximately 45.77 million euros (227.50 million lei).

The low-cost airline HiSky announces that starting from June 7, 2024, Romanians can fly directly to the United States on the Bucharest – New York route.

After 20 years, direct flights from Bucharest to New York have become possible with HiSky! From June 7, 2024, you can fly with us directly to the city of dreams – New York. Regular runs will be run weekly, every Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. Tickets are already available, priced from just 349 euros/way.

HiSky, a flight operator from the Republic of Moldova, received the authorization for regular flights to the United States of America on December 12, the company announced.

After completing all stages of the verification process, the US Department of Transportation issued us the Foreign Air Carrier Permit. This means that starting today, HiSky has the right to operate flights to any destination in the United States.

Thus, starting from this date, HiSky becomes the only Romanian airline that has the right to operate regular passenger flights from Europe to any destination in the United States of America.

We are happy to be able to confirm that before the end of the year, we managed to fulfill all our goals and the promises we made to our passengers. HiSky is today the only Romanian company authorized to operate regular flights in the United States and the first to have the ability to make direct flights to the most popular destinations around the globe. As promised, we are preparing for the launch of the first routes to the USA, which we will operate with the A330.
Iulian Scorpan, CEO of HiSky

The aircraft that allows the company to operate flights over this distance, non-stop, landed this week at Henri Coandă Airport in Bucharest. The Airbus A330 aircraft has been painted in the company’s colours at a maintenance base in Ireland and bears the registration YR-KID. This is the first wide-body aircraft to enter the HiSky fleet and the only one of this type that a Romanian company will operate. With a configuration in two service classes, business class and economy, it has an autonomy of up to 14 hours of non-stop flight; that is, it can cover non-stop distances of over 13,400 km.

The Airbus A330-200 is one of the most popular wide-body models and is found in the fleets of the most prestigious air operators in the world. With an operational efficiency in service of 99.4% and an advanced fly-by-wire control system, this modern and efficient aircraft is appreciated mainly for its reliability and performance, especially for long-haul trips.

In the version HiSky chose, the aircraft is powered by two powerful Rolls Royce Trent 772B engines and reaches a cruising speed of 870 km/h, with an autonomy of up to 14 hours of non-stop flight.

With an overall length of 58.8 meters and a wingspan of 60.3 meters, the A330-200 offers generous cabin space with a two-tone configuration that ensures superior passenger comfort, even on long-haul flights. The cabin is designed to maximize personal space, offering wider seats and more legroom.

The new Airbus A330 is the eighth aircraft to enter the HiSky fleet. Up to this moment, the airline has operated 7 Airbus aircraft from the A320 family, namely one A319 aircraft, four A320 aircraft, and two A321, produced in 2023.

Wizz Air representatives said the airline would launch six new routes from Italy in its summer 2024 schedule. It bases another three Airbus A321neo aircraft at Rome Fiumicino and one extra at Milan Malpensa.

This investment in our Romanian operation will turn Bucharest into the single largest operational base of Wizz Air, underlining our dedication to the country by creating new jobs with the company and the sector, stimulating the economy and providing affordable travel choices.
József Váradi, Wizz Air’s group CEO

According to the latest figures from European air traffic body Eurocontrol, Wizz Air operated 875 daily flights in September, which makes it the seventh-largest airline group in Europe.
As reported by Simple Flying, Romania’s Dan Air behind Airbus A320 flights on June 1st. Previously known as Just Us Air, Dan Air has 18 scheduled routes. The name comes from Captain Dan Luhas, who set up Just Us Air, a wet lease and charter operator.

According to ch-aviation.com, Dan Air has two A320s and one A319, with a third A320 coming. It has an average fleet age of 15.6 years. It appears that its A320s will be used on its scheduled flights.

Dan Air has 18 routes bookable: 11 from Romania’s capital, Bucharest, and seven from Brasov. Brasov-Ghimbav is a new airport that is set to open in June, serving the country’s sixth most populous city. While it is not yet fully definite, it appears the IATA code will be BRV, previously used by Germany’s Bremerhaven.

According to the source mentioned above, Dan Air’s inaugural flight is due to leave Bucharest for Nuremberg on June 1st. JOC101 is scheduled to depart at 06:00, and JOC102 is expected to return at 16:40.

Several companies have tried to cover the gap following Blue Air’s insolvency. After the company suspended all flights, Wizz, Dan and AirConnect fought to supply in a demanding market. Competition is good, let’s see about the quality of the services all these companies provide.

Smooth flights!
