Eugen Ion said that none of the agencies contacted Jurilovca Town Hall, the organiser of the festival, to verify whether the 2026 edition would take place or to request an official date.

Local authorities reportedly contacted some of the agencies and asked them to remove the misleading offers. Despite those efforts, coaches and private cars continued to arrive in Jurilovca during the weekend.

The mayor described using the festival’s name to sell trips without confirmation from the organiser as deceptive. He also stressed that an event of this scale would have been officially announced by the local administration if it had been scheduled.

It is therefore impossible to determine whether the platform generated the dates independently, relied on outdated online information or interpreted misleading content already circulating on the internet.

In this case, a direct confirmation from Jurilovca Town Hall would have established that the 2026 edition of the Lipovan Borscht Festival was not taking place.

Popovici had already broken the championship record during Tuesday’s semifinals, when he clocked 46.72. Less than 24 hours later, he lowered that mark by another 0.16 seconds in the final.

Romanian Defence Minister Radu Miruță announced on Monday, August 3, that the controlled underwater explosion had achieved its immediate objective. The intervention involved specialists from both the Romanian Land Forces and Naval Forces and followed a preliminary test designed to determine the appropriate quantity and placement of explosives.

“This was a complicated operation because the explosives had to be placed underwater,” Miruță explained.

Emergency Intervention amid Falling Danube Levels

The operation was organised as water levels on the Danube continued to fall, creating the risk that the Cernavodă Nuclear Power Plant could no longer receive the water flow required for its operation.

According to the initial technical estimates presented by the minister, without an emergency intervention, the nuclear plant could have been forced to begin shutdown procedures as early as Wednesday or Thursday.

Miruță said that every additional day during which the plant remains operational after that point represents a measurable benefit for Romania’s energy system. He estimated that one additional day of production at Cernavodă is approximately three times more financially valuable than the total cost of the intervention.

Rock Fragments to Be Removed from the Danube

The explosion represents only the first stage of the operation. The dislodged rock fragments must now be extracted from the riverbed using two barges and a high-capacity crane.

Authorities will remove as much of the fragmented rock as technically possible over the following hours and days. Specialists from the Romanian Waters administration will then evaluate the results and determine how the extracted material should be managed.

The operation is also expected to improve navigation and facilitate future dredging work along the Bala branch and the Old Danube.

According to the defence minister, approximately 85% of the Danube’s flow currently enters the Bala branch, while only around 15% continues through the Old Danube, which supplies the Cernavodă area.

A broader infrastructure project was supposed to raise the riverbed level along the Bala branch and dredge the Old Danube to improve water distribution. Miruță said the project had remained blocked at the Ministry of Transport since April 2024, forcing authorities to resort to an emergency solution.

Romanian authorities had attempted to remove the Pârjoaia rock formation in previous years, but those efforts failed.

The disaster against Auda is not an isolated episode. FCSB has accumulated several humiliating European results in recent years, repeatedly losing to clubs it had publicly treated as inferior opponents.

In 2022, Silkeborg defeated FCSB 5-0 in Denmark and then repeated exactly the same score in Bucharest. The Romanian club lost the two Conference League matches by an extraordinary combined score of 10-0.

In 2025, FCSB was eliminated from the Champions League qualifiers by Shkëndija of North Macedonia. The Romanian champions lost 1-0 away and 2-1 at the National Arena, exiting the competition after two defeats and a 3-1 aggregate score.

Now Auda joins that list after defeating FCSB twice and scoring seven goals across the tie.

Silkeborg, Shkëndija and Auda are no longer isolated accidents. They form a pattern: arrogance before the match, chaos on the pitch and excuses after elimination.

For a club that constantly presents itself as the dominant force in Romanian football, these defeats expose a much less flattering European reality.

FCSB is not experiencing its first shameful defeat.

It is simply adding another one to an increasingly long list.

The strike, organised by the SANITAS Federation, affects more than 500 medical institutions. Hospitals continue to provide emergency treatment and essential medical services, but routine activity has been reduced, while consultations, scheduled admissions and non-urgent procedures may be postponed.

Elective Surgery Suspended at Timișoara Intensive Care Clinic

The Anaesthesia and Intensive Care Clinic at the Timișoara County Emergency Hospital announced that it would join the general strike beginning Wednesday, July 29.

Emergency surgical procedures will continue to be performed, but elective operations will be suspended for the duration of the strike. As intensive care and operating theatres are essential for most major surgical procedures, the decision is expected to affect several medical departments within the hospital.

Other hospitals have introduced similar restrictions, maintaining emergency departments, intensive care, dialysis, oncology, neonatology and other services that cannot be interrupted while reducing non-essential activity.

At the Pitești County Emergency Hospital, emergency services, intensive care, dialysis, oncology, neurology, neonatology and emergency operating theatres remain fully operational. At the Târgu Jiu County Emergency Hospital, emergency care continues, but some outpatient consultations are expected to be rescheduled.

Protests Reported Across Romania

Healthcare workers also organised protests at hospitals in Suceava, Drobeta-Turnu Severin and Bucharest.

More than 60 medical employees reportedly joined the strike at the “Sf. Ioan cel Nou” County Emergency Hospital in Suceava. The institution is operating at approximately one-third of its normal capacity, while emergency treatment continues to be provided.

Around 40 employees protested outside the Drobeta-Turnu Severin County Emergency Hospital on Tuesday morning. In Bucharest, some employees remained inside hospital departments because they could not leave their workplaces during working hours.

SANITAS Says the Strike Will Continue Indefinitely

SANITAS announced that the general strike would continue for an indefinite period unless the Government addresses the union’s demands.

The federation argues that the proposed salary law could reduce the earnings of some healthcare and social assistance employees while maintaining existing inequalities between professional categories.

Healthcare workers are demanding the preservation of bonuses paid for night shifts, weekends and public holidays, the elimination of potential salary reductions and direct negotiations with unions before a new salary law is adopted.

Union representatives have also raised concerns about chronic staff shortages, excessive workloads and professional exhaustion inside Romanian hospitals. They insist that the protest is not directed against patients and that essential medical assistance will continue throughout the strike.

SANITAS president Iulian Pope said healthcare workers were facing pressure and alleged attempts at intimidation but urged union members to remain united.

Health Minister Says Salaries Will Not Decrease

Interim Health Minister Cseke Attila responded that the unified salary law was not initiated by the Ministry of Health and said the ministry had received assurances that healthcare employees’ incomes would not decrease.

According to the minister, approximately 80% of employees could receive higher incomes, while the remaining 20% would be covered by a compensation mechanism intended to maintain their current earnings until 2031.

The assurances have not persuaded SANITAS to suspend the protest. The federation maintains that the current version of the proposed legislation does not adequately protect healthcare employees or address the staffing crisis affecting hospitals.

The nationwide strike follows a two-hour warning strike held on July 20, when hundreds of hospitals reduced their activity and provided only emergency treatment and approximately one-third of their usual services. Unions had warned that a full general strike would begin on July 28 unless an agreement was reached with the authorities.

The latest incursion occurred on Saturday morning, July 25, near Romania’s border with Ukraine. Military radar systems detected the unidentified drone at 8:22 a.m. while it was flying in the border region.

Two Romanian Air Force F-16 Fighting Falcon aircraft, operating under the country’s Air Policing service, were sent to intercept the target. The drone was identified and destroyed at approximately 8:30 a.m., around ten kilometres west of Sfântu Gheorghe, in the Danube Delta.

The Romanian Defence Ministry said the engagement was conducted safely above an unpopulated area near the border, without endangering civilians or property. No casualties or material damage have been reported.

Defence Ministry teams are being deployed to the impact area to locate and recover the wreckage. Investigators will attempt to establish the drone’s model, origin, flight route and possible mission.

The Ministry has not yet publicly confirmed whether the second drone was Russian or whether it was carrying explosives.

Residents of Tulcea County received a RO-Alert warning during the military operation, informing them that objects could fall from the airspace and advising them to remain calm and seek shelter.

Same Romanian Pilot Carried Out Both Interceptions

The Ministry of Defence subsequently confirmed that the drone was destroyed by the same Romanian F-16 pilot who shot down the aircraft that crossed Romania on Friday.

The pilot has therefore successfully neutralised two drones violating NATO airspace in less than 24 hours.

Friday’s incident began when Romanian radar systems detected a drone east of Sulina, near the Black Sea coast. Romanian F-16 aircraft and Italian Eurofighter Typhoons deployed in Romania under NATO’s Air Policing mission were scrambled to intercept it.

An Italian Eurofighter reportedly launched a missile at the drone but failed to hit the target. A Romanian F-16 later engaged the aircraft with an air-to-air missile and destroyed it over an uninhabited area near Padina, in Buzău County.

Fragments believed to belong to the drone were subsequently discovered in a wheat field. No people were injured, and no buildings or infrastructure were damaged.

Romanian military officials said the aircraft visually resembled a Shahed-type attack drone. Prosecutors investigating the recovered wreckage later described it as a Shahed-type drone, although the complete investigation into its origin remains ongoing.

The Romanian Defence Ministry also rejected reports that the drone had flown over or close to Romanian military bases.

Second Drone Destroyed Near the Ukrainian Border

Saturday’s interception took place considerably closer to the Romanian-Ukrainian border than Friday’s engagement.

The drone was detected, intercepted and neutralised within approximately eight minutes, indicating a rapid response from Romania’s radar surveillance and Air Policing forces.

The Romanian Ministry of Defence said it continues to monitor the country’s airspace and remains in close contact with allied NATO structures. Further information is expected after military investigators examine the crash site and analyse the recovered debris.

The two incidents represent the first confirmed occasions on which Romania has used fighter aircraft to destroy drones violating its national airspace after repeated incursions linked to attacks against Ukrainian infrastructure near the Danube and the Black Sea.

Romania, a NATO and European Union member, shares a border of more than 600 kilometres with Ukraine and has repeatedly detected drones or recovered drone fragments on its territory since Russia began targeting Ukrainian ports along the Danube.

The consecutive interceptions mark a significant change in Romania’s response to unauthorised drone incursions and demonstrate that Romanian pilots now have both the legal authority and the operational capability to engage airborne targets considered a threat to national territory.
